What do we do?

Background

Dumfries Town Board was created as part of the UK Government’s £1.5 billion Long-Term Plan for Towns. The purpose of which is to drive ambitious plans to regenerate 75 towns around the United Kingdom over the long-term.  Each chosen town will receive a 10-year endowment-style fund with £20 million of funding and support to give towns long term certainty to deliver projects over multiple years and the flexibility to invest in interventions based on evolving local needs and priorities. Dumfries is one of the 75 towns selected for this funding.

The plan will ensure a focus on long-term strategic transformations as well as shorter-term improvements.

The funding will be focused on the issues that matter most to local people, the themes which are focused on are thriving places, stronger communities and taking back control.

Goals

Our goal is to complete the regeneration of Dumfries over the next decade and beyond, with a key focus on the three main themes set by UK Government.  Our plan will be driven by community engagement and analysis.

Community Engagement

We carried out an engagement survey in June and July 2024, the results of which shaped our proposal for regeneration.

The survey was completed by over 1,800 people and highlighted areas for improvement including appearance, retail options, events. Although acknowledging the town’s rich cultural and historical resources, there was feeling that these are underutilised.

Next Steps

Our report was submitted to the Department of Levelling Up and Communities (DLUC) as requested on the 1st August 2024.  After the General Election and new UKGov Party, we have this month now received the new guidance for publishing our ‘Plans for Neighbourhoods, under the newly organised Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).  We are now moving into our next phase of ensuring that the already conducted engagement can be reworked to meet the new guidance.
